The First Investec Ashes Test Match’Back
Having been appointed as the waste management contractor for Glamorgan Cricket at The SSE SWALEC only weeks before they we were set to host the ‘The First Investec Ashes Test Match’, WCRS was under no illusion that our ‘first test’ had to have the winning formula. In anticipation of visitor numbers in excess of 60,000 and with the eyes of the world’s media firmly on the event, there was no room for error.
Working closely with Glamorgan Cricket and cleaning contractor AQS, it was our aim to ensure that waste was removed from the stadium as efficiently as possible without impacting on the experience of the spectators.
A combination of both meticulous planning and a great partnership with Glamorgan Cricket and AQS made for a seamless operation throughout, ensuring that the events of the day remained firmly on the pitch.
Over the course of the first Test Match over 80 tonnes of waste was collected and by introducing recovery and recycling of glass, energy from waste recovery and green waste recycling we achieved 100% diversion of waste from landfill. This resulted in a saving of 4.65 tonnes of CO2e emissions.
Dan Cherry, Head of Operations Glamorgan Cricket said: “The First Investec Ashes Test Match was a huge success and we have received excellent feedback from many of the spectators who visited The SSE SWALEC. We generated a large amount of waste during the 4 days of the match and it was a real challenge to ensure that the Stadium was clean and ready for customers at the start of each day. Following thorough planning and preparation work from WCRS we coped well with the demand and all waste was collected in a timely and organised fashion. We look forward to continuing to build our links with WCRS moving forward.”
Annmarie Hughes, WCRS Business Development Manager said: “We are really pleased with what we have achieved in a short space of time at Glamorgan Cricket. We know from experience, the challenges that come with high levels of public attendance and that one size doesn’t fit all. In this instance we used our shared expertise, working with the client and their supply partners to come up with the best solution for the job and the results speak for themselves. The hard work doesn’t stop here, following the busy summer period we are now working closely with Glamorgan Cricket to continuously improve environmental performance and drive up recycling and recovery rates and are looking forward to a successful and longstanding partnership.”
